Contest Tips

Elements of a Great Contest Entry Video

We’ve watched hundreds of contest entry videos since launching Invent the Summer. Most are great, some are not-so-great, and a few are superb! Our Junior and Senior Boards of Engineers compiled a list of essential elements for an excellent entry video.

The 5 elements of a great entry video are:

  1. Length! Keep it short. Aim for 30-90 seconds. Be sure to practice a few times before you film your video.
  2. Wow! Factor. Engage the viewers early by showcasing your solution at the very beginning. Then go into details about how you made it, the challenges you faced, and the things you learned.
  3. Clear Audio. We want to hear you, so speak clearly and try to eliminate any loud background noises.
  4. Visibility. Make sure we can really see your project. Whether inside or out, pay attention to the lighting of your videos. And film your solution’s action from start to finish.
  5. Smile! Prove to us that you are not a robot and have fun!
